Tech Equipment for Online Yoga Teaching

I use the following equipment for teaching Zoom classes and for recording to YouTube. There is a lot you can do from a phone, but I primarily use my computer for all video teaching and yoga business related content creation.

Computer

I always recommend a computer when streaming to Zoom or for recording YouTube videos. You have so many more options and settings. I'm a Apple/Mac user and my current computer is a 2022 MacBook Pro. Regardless if you're using Apple OS or Windows, a laptop will be better suited for online teaching vs. a mobile device.

As a side note – Mac computers come equipped with Quicktime for better quality video recording and iMovie for video editing.

Wireless Microphone

My go-to for online yoga teaching is the Rode Wireless Go II or the Rode Wireless ME. These are 2.4 gH (not bluetooth) and come with a clip-on microphone piece and a receiver that plugs into your computer, phone or tablet. There's also an option for 2 microphones if you think you'd need them. You will also need some additional cables I'll list below.

Cables for Wireless Microphone

Depending on what device you are using to record or stream, you may need some cables that your microphone does not come with. First, you'll absolutely need the Rode SC7 cable (or search for a TRS to TRRS cable). Second, a 3.5mm AUX to USB, USB-c, or lighting adapter. You'll use these two cables to connect from your microphone receiver to your phone or computer.

Note: black end into microphone receiver and gray end into the adapter cable to the computer/phone.

*I recommend to not use the charging cables for microphone audio connection

Webcam

Let's face it, no matter how fancy your computer is, the internal webcam is garbage. Therefore, I recommend the Logitech Brio webcam. Plus, this webcam is wide angle and will capture more of your surroundings for smaller spaces.

Lighting

The best kind of lighting is natural window lighting. But if you don't have that, the last enhancement you might consider beyond a microphone and webcam is additional lighting. I have an 18 inch Neewer Ring light, but also several inexpensive soft box lights (no specific brand). With limited space, LED wand lights are also a good option. Choose whichever seems light the right fit for you. Multiple lights at various angles will help eliminate shadows.

Speaker to Amplify your Voice

Using the Rode Wireless Go II or ME, plug the receiver into a speaker with 3.5 mm AUX input. Use the TRS to TRS cable (the black/black that it originally came with). Turn the volume and dB all the way up. Amplify away!

*Microphone connection is NOT bluetooth.
